Byram's Second Life and Its Driveways
Asphalt paving in Byram serves one of the newest city governments in the metro attached to one of the older place names. Byram first incorporated in 1870 and gave up its charter in 1931. It spent most of the next 80 years as an unincorporated community south of Jackson, until it incorporated again on June 16, 2009, after the Mississippi Supreme Court unanimously upheld a lower court ruling that let it form a city of about 20 square miles. We pave and repair driveways, resurface worn asphalt, sealcoat, and handle small commercial lots across that area.
Growth before the charter
Much of Byram's housing went up while it was still a census-designated place. The population was 7,386 in 2000 and 11,489 in 2010, a 55.6 percent increase, and 12,666 in 2020, with 5,362 housing units. So many driveways here are 15 to 25 years old: past the new stage, still structurally useful, and ready for maintenance. Crack sealing and sealcoating at this age can add years. Where the surface has started to ravel or crack in blocks, an overlay gives a new wearing surface without the cost of digging out a base that is still doing its job.
Near the river
Byram sits at about 279 feet, and the Pearl River flows south just east of the city limits. Lower ground on the east side drains more slowly than the higher lots to the west. That matters for driveways that run downhill toward a garage or back yard, where water can pond against the house. We look at which way your lot actually drains before we set the grade, and if a driveway has been funneling water toward the garage for years, we reshape it so it stops.
Interstate access
Interstate 55 runs along the east side of Byram, with exits 81 and 85, and it is about 10 miles north to downtown Jackson. Businesses near those exits see heavy turning traffic and trucks. For small commercial lots, the entrance and the first drive lane take most of the abuse; repairing those areas properly, with a thicker section if trucks use them, is often all a lot needs to get another several years of service.
A young city government
Byram hired its first police chief in 2010, its first fire chief in 2011, and dedicated its first fire station in 2014. Because the city is still building out its departments and ordinances, rules can change. If your project changes a curb cut or touches a street right-of-way, we check the current requirements with the city before scheduling. If your driveway connects to a state route, an MDOT permit applies to that connection. Call (601) 708-8413 for a free estimate anywhere in Byram.

- River and interstate. The Pearl River flows just east of the city limits, and I-55 serves Byram at exits 81 and 85.

Byram Questions
My Byram driveway is about 20 years old. Replace it?
Not necessarily. If the base is firm, crack sealing and sealcoating, or an overlay where the surface is worn, usually make more sense than a full replacement.
Why does water run toward my garage?
The driveway may have been graded toward the house, or settled that way. We regrade the base so the surface sheds water away from the garage.
Who handles permits in Byram?
The City of Byram handles local permits. We confirm current requirements before any work that changes a curb cut or reaches the street right-of-way.
