Asphalt Paving in Puckett, MS

Asphalt paving in Puckett is country work. Puckett is a small Rankin County village of 342 people in the 2020 census, and most of the homes around it sit on rural land with long driveways. The first settlement there, in 1837, was called Clear Creek. When A. A. Burnham applied for a post office in 1890, the names he asked for were already taken, so the Postal Service named it Puckett, after the Puckett family from Tishomingo. We pave long driveways, convert gravel to asphalt, repair older drives and handle small church and school lots.

The base does the work

On a long rural drive the asphalt is the part you see, but the base is the part that decides how long it lasts. Rankin County is one of the counties where Yazoo clay is found, the soil that swells after rain and shrinks in drought. Under a thin base, that movement shows up as ruts in the tire paths, cracks along the edges and soft spots wherever water sits. We regrade the existing gravel, cut out what is soft, add and compact stone, and shape a crown so water drains to the sides.

Paving in stages

A long driveway is a big project, and it does not have to be done all at once. The two places that take the most abuse are the entrance, where vehicles turn off the road and gravel scatters, and the parking area near the house. Paving those first fixes most of the daily headaches. The middle can follow later, tied in cleanly to what is already there.

School traffic

Puckett Attendance Center serves kindergarten through 12th grade for the Rankin County School District, and its Wolves won state 1-A football titles in 2002, 2006 and 2008. School and church lots in a small community carry heavy traffic at set times and very little otherwise, which makes them straightforward to schedule. We usually recommend patching the entrance and drive lanes, sealing cracks and restriping during a break.

A small place with a big nickname

A traveling show once wintered in Puckett for several years, which earned it the nickname "the largest little show place in the world." These days most of our trips out are for a single driveway, so we try to schedule Puckett jobs alongside others in eastern Rankin County. If your driveway connects to a state-maintained road, an MDOT permit applies to the connection. Call (601) 708-8413 for a free estimate.
