Paving at the Western Edge of Hinds County

Asphalt paving in Edwards takes us to the far western edge of Hinds County. Edwards sits on high ground about 1.5 miles east of the Big Black River, which forms the line with Warren County. It is 26 miles west of Jackson and 17 miles east of Vicksburg on Interstate 20, and the 2020 census counted 995 residents on about 1.7 square miles. We pave driveways, convert gravel drives to asphalt, repair and resurface older pavement and sealcoat in town and on the farms and homesites around it.

Why the town moved

Edwards began in the 1830s as a settlement called Amsterdam and became Edwards Depot when the railroad stopped there in 1839, named for R. O. Edwards' plantation. The depot was burned in 1863 during the Civil War, and in 1866 the town was rebuilt on its current site, then incorporated in 1871. That history explains the town's layout: an older core near the rail line, with lots that have been divided and rebuilt over 150 years. Driveways in the center are often short and sit close to the street.

High ground, steep edges

The town itself is on high ground, but the land falls toward the Big Black River bottoms to the west. Driveways that run down a slope toward the house or a back building tend to fail at the bottom, where runoff piles up, and at the edges, where it cuts into the soil. We grade those surfaces so water leaves along the whole length rather than collecting at one end, and we back the edges with compacted material so they hold.

Rural drives

Around Edwards most driveways are long and many are still gravel. Gravel washes, ruts and has to be regraded. Asphalt over a sound, compacted base ends most of that, and it does not have to happen all at once: paving the first stretch from the road and the parking area near the house covers the most-used parts.

Getting there

I-20 runs along the north side of town with access at exit 19. We often combine Edwards jobs with work in Bolton and Clinton along the same corridor. If your driveway connects to a state-maintained highway, an MDOT permit is needed for the connection, and we include that step in the plan. Edwards Questions

Do you travel to Edwards?

Yes. Edwards is at the western edge of our area, and we often schedule it with nearby jobs along I-20.

My downhill driveway washes out at the bottom. What helps?

Reshaping the surface so water leaves along its length, and building firm edges, keeps runoff from piling up and cutting under the asphalt.

Can my gravel driveway become the base for asphalt?

Often, yes. We regrade and compact the existing stone, add more where it is thin, then pave.
