Asphalt Paving in Mendenhall, MS

Asphalt paving in Mendenhall serves the county seat of Simpson County, on the southern edge of the Jackson metro. The town was first called Edna, after the wife of developer Phillip Didlake, and was renamed for lawyer Thomas Mendenhall because another Mississippi town already used the name. The 2020 census counted 2,199 residents and 1,060 housing units on about 5.4 square miles at 335 feet. We pave driveways, repair and resurface worn asphalt, sealcoat, and handle small lots for churches, offices and shops.

Around the courthouse

The Simpson County Courthouse was built in 1907, designed by architect Andrew J. Byron, and the blocks around it hold many of the town's offices and businesses. Small lots near a courthouse fill up on court days and sit quiet the rest of the time. They tend to wear at the entrance and in the first row of spaces, where cars turn and park most. Patching those areas, sealing cracks, sealcoating and restriping usually keeps a small lot in good shape for years before it needs a full overlay.

Older homes, older driveways

Mendenhall grew steadily from 606 people in 1910 to about 2,500 by 1970, and has held near that size since. Many homes are decades old, and a lot of the driveways are too. The 2020 census also showed 16.2 percent of housing units vacant, so we also get calls from owners getting a house ready to sell or rent. For those, a clean, sealed or resurfaced driveway is one of the quicker improvements a buyer notices.

Annexed areas

In the 1980s Mendenhall annexed Weathersby, a community about 2.7 miles southeast of town. Areas like that often have longer, rural-style driveways, some still gravel. Converting gravel to asphalt starts with fixing ruts and soft spots in the base and compacting stone, then laying the asphalt with enough crown to shed water.

Planning the work

Most Mendenhall jobs are single driveways or small lots, and we try to group them to keep scheduling efficient. If your driveway or lot entrance connects to a state-maintained highway, an MDOT permit applies to the connection, and we include that step.
