Driveways in a City That Requires Them

Asphalt paving in Madison is shaped by the city's parking rules as much as by the soil. The City of Madison's parking regulations say cars, trucks and SUVs may not park in the required front, side or back yards "except on a paved driveway," and that "No motorized vehicles shall be parked in the grass and/or yard area." A boat, trailer or RV kept overnight on a driveway needs a city permit, each item needs its own, and the city wants written approval from the homeowners association first. All of it still has to sit on a paved or hard-surfaced driveway. When a household adds a car or a trailer, the driveway usually has to grow with it.

Widening and parking pads

Most of our Madison calls are for a driveway that is too narrow for the cars it serves, a second parking pad beside the garage, or a turnaround so nobody backs into the street. On these jobs we match the new edge to the old surface, cut a clean joint and tack it so the seam stays tight, and pitch the new section so it drains the same way as the original. If your HOA has rules on materials, width or placement, bring them to the estimate and we will design within them.

How fast Madison grew

Madison had 2,241 residents in 1980, 14,692 in 2000 and 27,747 in 2020. Driveways from the late 1980s and 1990s are now 25 to 35 years old, the age when the original asphalt has dried, faded and started to crack in blocks. If the base is still firm, a mill and overlay or a new surface course often gives a like-new driveway without digging out everything. If the driveway has dropped near the garage or along the edges, those sections need base repair first.

Clay, creeks and the Reservoir

Madison County is one of the counties with Yazoo clay deposits, the expansive soil that swells when it is wet and shrinks when it dries. The city drains three ways: the east side toward the Ross Barnett Reservoir, the north toward Bear Creek and the west toward Limekiln Creek. Water that sits along a driveway edge on clay is what lets the edge crumble and the surface crack. We grade every job to move water off quickly, and we will point out a downspout or a low yard spot that is feeding water under the pavement.

Storm history

On November 24, 2001, an F4 tornado crossed western Madison, traveling 11.5 miles and damaging or destroying 164 homes, including houses in the Fairfield subdivision. Rebuilding after storms like that brought a wave of new driveways in some neighborhoods, so driveway age can vary a lot from one street to the next. We look at your driveway on its own terms rather than assuming its age from the neighborhood.

Getting around the job

Interstate 55 crosses the city with exits at Madison Avenue and Highway 463, and U.S. 51 runs through the center. Many Madison subdivisions have one entrance, so we coordinate truck deliveries to avoid school traffic and keep the street open for neighbors. With a median age of 42.8 in 2020, plenty of our Madison customers want the work done in a single day with as little disruption as possible, and on most residential driveways that is realistic. Madison Rules and Numbers

  • Paved parking only. City rules prohibit parking vehicles in the grass or yard; they must be on a paved driveway or other hard surface, or in a garage or carport.
  • Trailer permits. Boats, trailers and RVs parked overnight on a driveway need a City of Madison permit, issued after written HOA approval.
  • Growth. Population went from 2,241 in 1980 to 14,692 in 2000 and 27,747 in 2020.
  • 2001 tornado. An F4 tornado on November 24, 2001 traveled 11.5 miles across western Madison and damaged or destroyed 164 homes.
  • Drainage. The east side drains to the Ross Barnett Reservoir, the north to Bear Creek and the west to Limekiln Creek.

Madison Questions

Where can I park a trailer in Madison?

City rules allow a boat, trailer or RV overnight on a paved or hard-surfaced driveway only with a city permit, and the city asks for written HOA approval first. A paved pad beside the driveway is a common solution.

My HOA has driveway rules. Can you work with them?

Yes. Send or bring the guidelines and we will design the width, edge and placement to fit them before we quote.

How long until I can drive on a new Madison driveway?

Usually a few days, longer in summer heat. We give you a specific time based on the weather on paving day.
