Canton, Old Square and New Industry

Asphalt paving in Canton runs from some of the oldest streets in the metro to some of the busiest industrial traffic. Canton is the Madison County seat, about 24 miles northeast of Jackson, and much of the town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including a large part of the east side. Just outside the southwest city limits is the Nissan auto plant, served by I-55 at the Nissan Parkway exit. Between those two ends are neighborhoods, churches, shops and lots that each need something different from their pavement.

Around the courthouse square

Canton's courthouse square is a historic shopping district and the home of the Canton Flea Market, and the Georgian courthouse at its center is one of the town's landmarks. The square has also been a film location for movies including A Time to Kill and O Brother, Where Art Thou? On older lots near the square and on the east side, driveways are usually short and narrow, often shared, and bordered by old trees. We plan those jobs around tight access, protect what is already there, and keep edges neat so the new asphalt fits the street.

Events and lot wear

When the flea market or another event fills the square, nearby church and business lots take far more cars than they were built for, often parked on the edges where asphalt is weakest. Broken edges, potholes at the entrance and faded striping tend to show up afterward. We repair edges with proper base support, patch failed spots, and restripe so the lot is easy to use the next time it fills up.

Truck traffic on the west side

Canton's west side is crossed by I-55, with exits 118 at Nissan Parkway and 119 at Highway 22, and U.S. 51 and Highways 16, 22 and 43 run through town. Commercial lots near those routes see box trucks and trailers. Heavy loads call for a thicker asphalt section and a well-compacted base, particularly where trucks turn. Entrances that connect to a state highway need an MDOT permit for the connection, which we account for in the plan.

Clay and creeks

Madison County is one of the counties where Yazoo clay is found, and Canton drains through Batchelor Creek and Bear Creek toward the Big Black River. Water that stands on clay swells it; drought shrinks it. That cycle is behind many wavy driveways and cracked lots. We check the base, remove soft material and put back compacted stone before paving.

Shared and family driveways

On the older east side, it is common to find one driveway serving two houses, or a long strip that runs back to a detached garage or a second home on the lot. Before we pave a shared drive, we ask both owners to agree on the scope and where the edges go, and we keep the work within your property line. Narrow strips that have been half-gravel, half-asphalt for years are good candidates for one clean, continuous surface, with a slight crown so rain runs off to the sides instead of down the middle.

Homes in town

The 2020 census counted 4,583 housing units in Canton. Many older homes have driveways that have been patched for decades. When patches outnumber original pavement, a full replacement or a mill and overlay is usually the better value. Call (601) 708-8413 for a free estimate anywhere in Canton.

Canton Questions

Can you work on a narrow driveway near the square?

Yes. We use smaller equipment and hand work at the edges, and plan deliveries so the street stays open.

Our church lot gets packed for events. What helps?

Repairing broken edges and entrances, crack sealing, sealcoating and clear striping. Edges carry a lot of event parking, so we rebuild them with solid base support.

Do lots near the Nissan corridor need heavier paving?

If trucks use them, yes. We build a thicker base and asphalt section in the lanes trucks drive and turn in.
