Asphalt Paving in Pelahatchie, MS

Asphalt paving in Pelahatchie covers a small town and a lot of country around it. Pelahatchie was founded in 1850 and named after Pelahatchie Creek; the name comes from a Native American term usually translated as "crooked creek." It sits in eastern Rankin County at about 358 feet, part of the Jackson metro but well out past the suburbs. The 2020 census counted 1,272 residents and 613 households. We pave driveways, turn gravel drives into asphalt, repair worn pavement, sealcoat, and take care of small lots for churches, schools and businesses.

A town older than its suburbs

Pelahatchie's population peaked at 1,599 in 1930 and has held fairly steady since, at 1,553 in 1990 and 1,334 in 2010. That means the town's homes cover a long span of ages. Driveways in the center of town are often decades old and have been patched over and over; at some point a patch only moves the problem a few feet. If the patches have taken over, a full replacement or an overlay over a repaired base will last much longer than another round of spot fixes.

Rankin County clay

Rankin County is one of the central Mississippi counties where Yazoo clay is found, according to city and state engineers quoted in the Clarion Ledger. The clay swells after rain and shrinks in dry weather, and pavement on top of it heaves and dips with it. On rural drives the symptoms are usually ruts in the wheel paths and soft spots where water sits. We find and remove soft material, build a thicker stone base, and give the surface a crown so water runs off to the sides.

School and church lots

Pelahatchie Attendance Center, the public school, and East Rankin Academy, a private school, both serve the area, and the town has several churches with their own parking. Lots like these are busy at set times and empty the rest of the week, which makes them easy to schedule. We usually suggest patching failed spots and the entrance, crack sealing, sealcoating and restriping in one visit, timed for a school break or between services.

Planning the trip

Most Pelahatchie jobs are a single driveway or a small lot, so we try to group work in the area to keep the schedule efficient. If your driveway connects to a state-maintained highway, the connection needs an MDOT permit, and we take care of that step with you. Call (601) 708-8413 for a free estimate anywhere in Pelahatchie.
